Summertime Spells: 6 Types of Magick That Work Best in Summer

Every season embodies specific spiritual themes and energies that are unique to that time of year. And summer is no exception to this rule.

Some of the more dominant energies at play during the summer include:

  • Passion
  • Vitality
  • Growing Life
  • Intensity
  • Joy
  • Revelry

Because of these unique correspondences, some forms of magick will experience a spiritual boost during the summer months. When the intentions of your magick align with the energies of the season, you’re more likely to experience quicker and more powerful results from your spellwork.

Today, we’re taking a look at six types of magick that work best during the summer. If you haven’t tried spells like this before, this is the season to give them a go!

Let’s take a look at what magick the summer holds.

Blessing Magick

Like the name implies, blessing magick involves the blessing of people or objects by drawing in positive, beneficial energies. In some ways, a blessing is a form of protection–by surrounding the object of your blessing with good energy, negative energy has a harder time taking hold. No matter what specific form your blessings may take, they act as a force for goodness in the world.

The summer is a time of power and abundance, which makes it perfectly aligned with the intentions behind blessing magick. This is the time of year when life is at its fullest and the universe has plenty of blessings to go around–why not tap into this force of goodness for yourself?

Blessing magick is a broad category that covers all sorts of practices. Some of the more common types include:

  • Blessing rituals
  • Prayers of blessing
  • Anointing (with consecrated water or oil)
  • Talismans (physical objects meant to draw in good energy)

Invoking the God and Goddess

By using the power of ritual magick, Wiccans are able to call down the spirits of the Horned God and Triple Goddess in order to share in their power or offer them thanks. This is not a form of magick to take lightly, but, when performed respectfully and correctly, it allows you to tap into the divine forces that animate all life.

During the summer months, the Wiccan God and Goddess are at the height of their powers for the year, which makes it a particularly opportune time for invoking them. They both share in the life and vitality of the season and are willing to bestow their blessings on all who ask.

Invocations typically take the form of prayers and rituals to the deity you are calling upon, and they typically involve an offering of some sort. That’s one thing you should always remember to include!

The God and Goddess both have summer holidays associated with them, so these make the perfect dates for an invocation. Traditionally, the Goddess is associated with Beltane on May 1st, while the God is associated with Litha, which falls on the summer solstice.

Plant Magick

Plant magick is a broad category that covers any sort of magick you work with the help of or for the benefit of plants. This is an ancient form of witchcraft that stretches back much further than the history of Wicca itself–people have been harnessing the magickal power of plants in unique ways for eons.

Summer marks the perfect time to work with plants because they are a tangible, living symbol of the life-giving power of the season. Just as they are nourished and enhanced by the warm, summer sun, they can help nourish and enhance our own lives with the spiritual power they offer us.

There are far too many types of plant magick to list them all here, but some types are more common and popular than others. Some forms of plant magick you’re likely to encounter are:

  • Sachets (small bags of fragrant, dried plants, herbs, and flowers)
  • Tinctures (extracts created by steeping plants in alcohol or other liquids)
  • Smudging (burning herbs or other plants with specific spiritual energies)
  • Plant blessings (to ensure the health of plants that are currently growing)

When working with plants, it’s always beneficial for a witch to grow her own. Be sure to check out our article on Wiccan Plants and Herbs Every Witch Should Grow to learn more!

Fire Magick

The power of the flame is an essential part of many spells and rituals. From banishing to blessing, fire is a symbol that frequently appears in magick in a myriad of different ways.

Fire is an element of passion and intensity, which makes it a natural fit for the spiritual themes of the summer. In fact, fire (specifically bonfires) play an important role in the celebration of two of the Wiccan summer holidays–Beltane and Litha.

Fire magick can be used in a range of ways, from candle spells to ritual bonfires. And let’s not forget the ultimate source of fire–the sun. I would include rituals working with or honoring the sun as an important aspect of fire magick as well.

Love Magick

Love is in the air when summer rolls around, which makes it the perfect time for a little love magick. Any sort of spell or ritual that involves romance, relationships, or another aspect of love falls into this category.

While summer is a good time for love spells in general, there are certain types that will do better at different points in the season.

For example, the time around Beltane (May 1st) is a common time for fertility magick, while the time around Litha (approximately June 22nd) is a better time for spells that have to do with passion and romance. Finally, the late summer marks a good time to ask for continued love and success in a long-term relationship.

Prosperity Magick

Prosperity is another magickal theme that works well with the summer. Any sort of ritual or spell that’s intended to manifest abundance in your life falls under the category of prosperity magick–whether that’s physical, emotional, or spiritual abundance.

Late summer is a particularly good time for prosperity magick, especially around the holiday of Lammas (August 1st). Traditionally, this was a time when farmers would ask for a good crop harvest for the fall, but you can use this period to ask for any sort of prosperity–even if it’s not a literal harvest.

Manifesting prosperity most commonly takes the form of money spells, but that’s by no means the only thing to do. Achieving a specific personal goal can be another form of prosperity, so spells that involve this are also a good option at this time. Finally, invocations and prayers to the Lord and Lady are another common way that Wiccans seek prosperity through magick.

Your Magickal Summer Awaits

Finding the best timing for spells can seem like a pain, but really, it’s one of the most powerful tools that a witch has at her disposal. When the energies of the universe and your personal will align as perfectly as possible, you begin to experience the true power of magick.

However, magick isn’t just a summertime affair–it’s something you can practice year round!
