What’s the secret to being a successful witch?

Super secret supplies?
Being born naturally gifted?
Thankfully, the answer is a resounding NO to all of the above!
Like any skill, one of the easiest and most effective ways to get better at witchcraft is to emulate the techniques of more accomplished practitioners.
And when it comes to casting spells, there are certain things that the most successful and powerful witches share in common.
Today, we’re taking a look at five of those things you can use to improve your own spellwork. There’s nothing stopping you from being a successful witch in your own right–but only if you know the secrets to improving your magick!
Let’s take a look at five things successful witches always do when casting a spell.
1) They do their research.
No two spells are exactly alike, even if they both serve basically the same purpose. And this applies just as much to their quality as their contents.
A successful witch doesn’t just choose the first love spell she comes across and hope for the best!
To cast truly powerful spells, you’ve got to do a little research to ensure that you’ve found the best version of whatever it is you’re trying to accomplish.
You don’t have to spend hours, days, weeks, and months pouring over books and websites, but it’s good to give yourself a few options to choose from.
When you do this, you’ll find that some spells have correspondences, supplies, or incantations that better align with what you’re trying to accomplish. And it’s rare that the first spell you come across will be the best fit for you.
This advice applies to those of us who are spell writers too! Never go with draft one of a spell you’ve written. It’s almost certain that there are things you can modify and edit to ensure a more powerful spell.
2) They don’t rush the process.
If you have any previous experience with Wicca or witchcraft, you probably already know how much fun it is to cast a spell. The ritual, the pageantry, the special words–these are all things that human beings seem to have a natural love and affinity for. However, a successful witch does not rush the process of preparing for a spell just to get to the fun bits more quickly.
She knows that taking her time and doing things right will lead to more fruitful results.
I know firsthand what a boring pain it can be to be patient when it comes to casting spells. Waiting for the right timing, researching different supplies to find the perfect ones–these things take time that we don’t always feel like spending.
However, making sure everything is in place will ultimately ensure your spell is as powerful as it can be.
3) They have a focused and refined magickal intention.
Your intention is by far the most important part of a spell.
In a nutshell, a spell’s intention is the specific goal you want to accomplish by casting it. And when it comes to setting a good intention, it pays to be as specific and clear as possible.
My rule of thumb for intentions is this. They should be:
- Short (only one or two sentences)
- Clear (no room for misinterpretation)
- Specific (one particular goal that you can measure)
A successful witch knows that a spell will suffer without a good intention. You may still be able to raise some spiritual energy from a spell without one, but that energy won’t be focused and directed at the right goal.
The universe can’t manifest your desire if you can’t even articulate what that desire is! So, take a moment to write a clear, concise intention as you do the prep work for your spell.
4) They prepare themselves mentally.
Casting a spell is not something you quickly squeeze in between your other errands for the day.
Your spell time should be special and set apart from the other obligations and worries of your life.
A successful witch knows that casting a powerful spell requires temporarily withdrawing from the “real world” and focusing all her mental energy on the magickal task at hand. She doesn’t want to go into the spell distracted or unfocused.
It’s best to take some time shortly before casting a spell to ground and center your thoughts in preparation for what’s to come. This doesn’t have to be particularly in-depth or intense–I normally take about 15 minutes to meditate. This helps me to clear my mind and focus all my thoughts on my magickal intention.
5) They forget about the spell once it’s cast.
So you go to all the effort of planning and executing the perfect spell and then you’re just supposed to pretend like it never happened?
Basically, yes!
A successful witch knows that constantly fretting over a spell that’s already been cast is, at best, useless–at worst, counterproductive.
She knows that, at this point, it’s out of her hands and is happy to get out of the way and let the universe do its work.
Unlike what you see in movies and on TV, real spells aren’t instantaneous; they take time to work. The time between casting a spell and seeing results can sometimes take days or even weeks. Constantly being on the lookout for results (especially if you’ve recently cast the spell) is just a waste of your time. Patience is the key!
Additionally, too much worry about the results of a spell can actually have a negative impact on it. Our thoughts, words, and actions all carry spiritual energy, and that goes for unpleasant emotions like worry and anxiety, too. They can really muck up the delicate balance of energy you’ve manifested by casting a spell.
Your best bet after casting a spell is to put it out of your mind as much as possible and trust that your magickal intention is making its way to you on its own timeline.

With the right preparation and know how, there’s really nothing stopping you from improving your skills and becoming a successful, competent witch who casts powerful, effective spells. Making sure you cross your T’s and dot your I’s takes work, but it will lead to the good results you’re looking for.
